<image:caption>OPPORTUNITY: When Seattle Good Business Network members asked for a place where they could buy, sell and exchange used and excess materials, SGBN leadership saw an opportunity to build an online marketplace for Seattle and surrounding region that could tackle the complex problem of waste management. APPROACH: Circular by Design led a series of multi-stakeholder workshops with public and private partners to understand challenges, opportunities, vision and mission around a circular economy for the Seattle regional area. Workshops and ongoing conversations are informing an early version of a materials reuse and exchange online platform as well as a later prototype that will scale to serve larger region. CBD is also engaging circular design tools and methods to assist local businesses to launch new, circular business models. The new business ventures will be onboarded into the new digital marketplace environment to streamline important communications and provide tools needed for circular market offerings. IMPACT: This project is ongoing.</image:caption>

<image:caption>OPPORTUNITY: The city of Seattle wanted to develop a long overdue, online application for their Utility Assistance Program. When the COVID crisis erupted they needed feedback on an early prototype to hit the ground running with their development efforts. APPROACH: Circular by Design understood right away that designing an online experience for low-income populations was not the same as designing for other audiences. An early recommendation in the project was to engage mobile-first design with minimal load times to address inequities in computer and internet access for this target audience. A remote, online informal usability study was conducted with low-income Seattle residents to evaluate workflow and observe challenges in completing early prototype. IMPACT: While much of the the prototype was easily navigated by participants, the study underscored the burden of participants understanding the correct paperwork that needed to be submitted for the application. Design interventions were recomended that could ease this burden, and motivated stakeholder conversations on whether the user experience could be enhanced by requiring less documentation.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Consumers Energy</image:title>
<image:caption>OPPORTUNITY: Consumers Energy set out to evaluate comprehension and utility of personalized energy efficiency reports for their business customers. The reports were part of an overall effort to decrease energy usage from business customers. APPROACH: Circular by Design (CBD) faciliated a series of paper prototype studies to understand how business customers were using reports, if at all. Perceived obstacles and opportunities with energy efficiency measures were also gathered. IMPACT: Rather than solely focus on the reports themselves, CBD made sure to understand roles and approaches to energy efficiency within customer organizations. As a result, it was found that reports were mostly opened by individuals within the organization that were responsible for paying company bills rather than those concerned with energy efficiency. In other words, they were not used at all for majority of participants. In addition, based on conversations with participants, scenarios were developed that made clear how participants might use existing and future energy efficiency data. These scenarios were used to develop future-state data visualizations for customers.</image:caption>
